Surviving & Thriving In the Gig Econo...

Description

Looking for a full time professional level job with benefits? They’re getting hard to find.

Today jobseekers are being offered short-term contract work, temp assignments, or offers as “self-employed”, everything but the coveted permanent full time position. Nearly all of the 10 million jobs created in the last decade were not traditional 9-5 jobs, (Katz and Krueger 2016). Employment in the so-called “Gig Economy” is growing much faster than standard payroll employment and is expected to reach 40% of the workforce by 2020. Some “gig” work is attractive in terms of hours and pay, while other jobs, e.g., Uber drivers, warehouse workers, coding assignments, have some serious drawbacks.

In this workshop, you’ll explore the changing nature of work, looking at the positive and negative sides of our expanding “gig” economy. You’ll learn how to navigate this changing landscape to use it to your own advantage, mastering survival strategies and how you can benefit from today’s “contingent” labor market.

This workshop will cover:

  • Overview of the changing world of work – how and why this came about
  • What kinds of opportunities are available and how to find them
  • Downsides and upsides of the gig economy
  • Branding/Marketing yourself for gig work
Practical application – making this work for you
